Waukesha Fire Department received an alarm of a structure fire around 12:17 a.m. Units responded to 728 W. St. Paul Ave., which is a occupied 20 unit apartment building.  The building is built on the east side of W. Saint Paul Ave on a step slope. Front of the building exposes three levels, the back side of the building is a single story.  The building is constructed using common wood framing and has a single fire wall in the attic space.  

Waukesha fire fighters arrived on scene, rescued several tenants from their exterior balconies and accounted for all residents.  Along with accounting for the residents, firefighters removed several animals from the building. Hose lines advanced to the third floor, north east apartment and extinguished the primary fire. Firefighters then work till 1:28 when the fire is reported under control.
